What is the difference?

Got a chance at an Oliver Super 88 gas with a rod out the block very cheap. Thinking of parting it out or making is into a diesel possibly a puller too. Aside from the engine and sheet metal is there any difference in an 88, Super 88, or an 880? I pull with guys who put 1850 diesel engines in them.

I think there might be a lot of fabrication with the 354 perkins as alot use the 310 wauk in them. The 354 is in the 1850. The gasser 1850 is probally easier to put in.

When it came out it broke the starter off between the nose and the casing in the thinner part of the casting, and came out under the water jacket. I have always wanted an Oliver 88 series diesel tractor, and have leads on decent rebuildable engines from Super88/880's too. Someone took the manifold, water pump, carb, tach drive and some other minor things off the engine. I bought it from a friend who bought it for the seat and I think I have more in the trailer ride home than I paid for it. If I put a diesel Super 88/880 engine in it, what else would I have to change? By the way, the rod is hanging there with both bolts in tact and the cap is destroyed and laying in a dent in the oil pan. I can't see what shape the crank is in. It blew up cleaning out the cow lot and they left it sit for a few years where it died, until they moved it for the sale. The tires and rims are in good shape, green cast centers and rims all the way around. This tractor even has the entire hydra-lectric system inplace too, from the steering column switches to the wiring and connectors.

Super 88 and 880 had 1/8" larger rear axle diameter. Most 88's had band brakes, not disc like on late 88's, S-88, 880's.
Late model 880's had constant mesh helical gear transmissions.
So, yes, there were differences..
1850 gas engines would be a better fit than the diesel.

If you have hydra-lectric switches on the steering column, it is not a Super 88 to start with. Did you look for a serial number?
