550 clutch help

The better half was brush hogging this afternoon and when I jumped on the 550 to move it, it would not come out of gear. I finally got it out but it won't go back in gear while running. The clutch won't engage enough to get it in gear. I've messed with the amount of travel in the pedal but I can't get it to work. I'm wondering if my disc is wore enough so that I don't have enough friction left on it.
If you saw my other post about haying, I've been using the tractor all week including this morning with no issues at all. All of a sudden the damn thing won't shift. Any ideas before I tear into this thing too far? [/code]

How much real free travel do you have. I mean take all the wear out of the linkage? How far can you idle the tractor down? How is the oil level in the transmission? Have you taken the little plate off that you use to adjust the PTO clutch, stuck a good flexible magnet in there and found something (other than gold)? If you elimate all free travel does it release then? When was the last time you greased the throwout bearing and did it have free travel before?

And one addition to JS. Does the better half 'ride' the clutch pedal? If so, the clutch will sooner need replacement than if not!

Regards, RAB

J,

I haven't looked up into the plate yet. I think that's the first thing to do today. Oil level was good but I'll check that today again. I had a couple of inches of free travel before it stopped working. I can idle the tractor down pretty far. Adjusting the free travel and idling down doesn't seem to make any difference in the clutch.
I'll let you know what I find when I look into the plate today.

Well here is an update on my inspection this afternoon. I checked the fluid level and I'm within one inch of the check plug as far as I can tell. I pulled the inspection plate and I found a pin laying in the grease on top of the plate. The pin is about 3/4 inch long and 1/8 inch in diameter with a hole in the end, like for a cotter pin. There seems to be a fair amount of grease on top of the plate. Seems excessive to me. The hose seems to be intact so I'm not sure where its coming from. When I push on the clutch pedal I can see two springs moving above the PTO clutch assembly. I can't see too much more than that.
Any ideas where the pin might be from? I have a feeling that I'm going to have to split it to get a better idea of what's going on in there. If you have any other things to check let me know please.

RAB,

I gently asked about riding the clutch and she said that she hadn't. :) She drives a standard car so she knows not to do that.

The pin may have come out of one of the PTO glutch arms...Those are the only ones in that area...

wmthrower the pin you describe is a pressure plate pivot pin on a release finger this is my opinion and would cause your problem in frindship gene

Thanks for the response Gene. I'll let you know once I get into it this week. I just got my manual so now I will know what I'm supposed to be looking at.
