Advice on rebuilding '62 Oliver 550? Thanks in advance

Planning to help a friend rebuild his '62 Oliver 550 (gasoline). It needs the timing chain/belt done, and who knows what else tuned or replaced, once we get it opened up.

We have a basic manual, but --hoping for more info-- I decided to check around on the internet and found this forum.

I did some searches here, for "timing belt", "timing chain", "engine rebuild" etc. but have struck out, other than this one handy bit:

I am a beginner-level mechanic and have not yet worked on a tractor, so I am asking you guys here for any advice you might have to offer.

Thanks.

There is no timing belt or timing chain. Is this an overhaul as new sleeves and piston, rings bearings, etc. Were you thinking or taking the engine out of the frame to do this? About say 40 years agop Oliver published instruction sheets that came with the sleeve and piston kits and were intended as simple instructions. You might want to find one and read it first.

Thanks for the info!
Well, you can see I have a lot to learn...

: )

I cannot answer your questions since my friend with the 550 has not yet shown me the tractor. He lives an hour away from me, so this is going to be a learning experience.

Thanks again.
