77 injectors

Do you have to set the injectors on a 77 diesel? Is there some screw to turn on each indivdual injector? I have all of the timing marks right, but this thing still wont fire. It will smoke, but it just wont start. So, now I'm thinking there isnt enough fuel getting into the injectors. Is this possible?

Yes they need to be set and if you DO NOT have the tester to do DO NOT be fooling with them. Explain to me how you timed it: Step by step just how you did it.

Alright first i got the fp mark lined up, the injection pump marks are lined, and the gear inside the injection pump is about one tooth past the pointer. Its on the compression stroke, and its still wont start, but little puffs of white smoke come out, so now my only theory is is that it isnt getting enough fuel inside the cylinders. I had the injectors cleaned and new tips were put on, so maybe the machine shop ddnt set them right.

When you are looking at the inside gear, which way is it one tooth past the mark? Toward the front or rear of the tractor from the mark? Did you hand pump the primary pump to prime the injection pump?

It's towards the back of the tractor. Yes i pumped the fuel pump. I know fuel is getting through because I took the return line off the #6 injector, the line that goes up to fuel tank, and fuel would come out.

First question: How did you determine #1 cylinder is on compression stroke? I have seen this a few times where the flywheel was put on wrong. Take the valve cover off and check all this and let us know. Fuel deliverly (the amount of fuel going into the cylinders) is the function of the injection pump not the injectors.

first of all, we need some history on this motor, when did it quit running, has it been setting for a long period of time, you may have washed the rings and lost enough compression it wont fire, pull the valve cover make sure no bent pushrod, also ck valve clearances, pull one injector and hook up pressure line and see if you are getting good spray when you crank the engine, have you tryed either stating i hope not, ive seen rods bent and pushrod due to detonation, where are you located at i have a compression checker for these engines, how old is the fuel more than 6 mos. old change it, you can have the pump off just alittle and it will still run just not good, might try a pull start in 5th gear if everything cks out, if its your injectors for some reason which seriously doubt, i have a rebuilt set but they are set at 2700psi so need a really good pump to handle them, more history will help tremendously as to the tractor and what you have already attempted to correct
