550 cluster guage dead

Well after I mounted the alternator and rewired the right side of my 550 gas, I started her up and for the first time the amp light came on when I turned the key to on. Oil buzzer lit up and buzzed like it always has. Fender lights work now too.
Here's the question: I shut off the tractor and when I was putting the tinwork around the key switch back in, I think I shorted something as sparks came out from behind the tinwork I was putting in. I still have fender lights and the tractor will turn over. What I don't have is an oil buzzer and light or an amp light. I have power coming into and out of the key switch. I'm wondering if the cluster guage was shorted.
Anybody have any thoughts?

Maybe your cluster gauge is wrong polarity? Originals were +ve ground, but you can get -ve ground nowadays too. If you have an alternator you may have just blown a +ve ground gauge.

Tape up all the under-dash connections with electrical tape to be safe too.

Chris, thanks for that suggestion. You may be exactly right with the guage. I had thought I had read the original guages were neither positive or negative ground but I may have misread that. Is there a way to test the guage other than putting voltage to the guage and seeing if it responds?

I ordered a new cluster gauge from Korves Oliver last year. I think the were around $85. They are almost identical to the old ones. Those guys are very knowledgeable over there and would probably be able to give you advice on testing your gauge. Good Luck.
