2N steering sector packing install

Anybody have tips on how to get the rope packing into place? I have the first one in but so far haven't been able to compress it enough; it doesn't look like the sector shaft will contact the bearing surface.
Are there any alternate to the rope? seems like a big fat o-ring wold do the trick.

I use a large (2") socket to roll it into place. Same way I do a rope seal on the rear main bearing. Some soak them in oil first.

We used to pull them into place with a Chinese finger kind of thing. The cable end went up around in the cavity, the seal was attached to the chinese finger and then you pulled on the other end. Clumsy but it worked. They were obtainable at most auto supply stores. Make sure you soak those seals for a couple of day and it will make things easier.

I've got em in place by rolling and compressed them as much as possible by clamping the sector shaft into the housing to force them into place. End result is sector shafts are really, really stiff. Is that normal? Will they loosen up under use?

Yes and yes. Just saturate them with whatever oil you have in the transmission.

Finding an oil seal with the right id would be simple . Finding the right od and width might take awhile , then rtv in place ?

I am in the middle of a long rebuild process of a few 8n . I do not like the top lift arm shaft not having any protection from letting rain water into the hydraulic system , especially if the bronze bushings have worn . A .060 gap on a 2" shaft will let a lot of that evil water seal in . I am experimenting with stacking 5 - 6 orings on each side between the center lever and the bushing . A grease fitting to push grease and contaninates out and a felt washer to keep dirt out ? I'll post back in a few years when I get done and let you know how that works .
