9n generator spring tensioner

I have a spring tensioner recently purchased off eBay. It appears that all tension on the fan belt is created by this tensioner. If that is the case, then the bolt mounting the generator has to be loose enough to allow the generator to pivot on the mounting bolt . If this is true , then I need a lock nut on the mounting bolt ?

The tensioner tightens the belt and the mounting bolt helps hold it in place after tightening. It should have a lock washer on it.

If when tightened that pivot bolt with hex nut and washer would prevent the generator from moving you wouldn't need the tensioner. It won't and you do

the reason I got the spring tensioner is because the mounting bolt alone is not keeping correct fan belt tension.not clear about correct setup. With initial setup do I leave mounting bolt slightly loose to allow
generator to pivot while I adjust spring tensioner to create proper belt tension ? then tighten mounting bolt ? If the generator tries to loosen , the spring tensioner is there to resist this.

Yes

First, let's be sure you have the correct belt tensioner. The 2N10000 generator had the belt tensioner fastened directly onto the body with two 1/4-28 x 5/8 hex head bolts. Upon its release, Ford also offered a kit for the previous 9N-10000-C generator whereby there was a steel band that clamped over the generator body. The kit would not work on the earlier 9N-10000-A and 9N-10000-B smaller body generators. Secondly, both tensioning devices have two main components -the spring assembly and the stationary bracket, p/n 2N-10178, that mounts onto the engine cylinder head. There is also the small special shoulder nut piece, p/n 2N-10180, that locks into the engine bracket from the spring side. More often than not, when I see old 2N generators and/or tensioning arms for sale these pieces are missing completely so the whole thing is useless without them. The assembled unit must have that secondary piece fastened on the cylinder head to which the long bolt can screw into and provide the proper tension. Thirdly, to adjust fan belt tension, loosen the generator pivot nut and bolt slightly. Next, adjust belt tension so there is a 1/2" travel when belt is depressed. Lock down the pivot nut and bolt securely. You don't need any special lock nut, a simple hex head nut with a lockwasher is all that is required. Check belt tension when all is tight and readjust if needed to get the 1/2" travel. Once tension is satisfactory, tighten the generator pivot bolt and nut securely. Pretty basic stuff but without all of the proper components, it won't function correctly. Now, if you have an early 8N generator, one mounted on the right side, the tensioning arm is completely different but let's stay with your 9N for now so there's no confusion...

thanks for the very thorough description of the spring tensioner. the tensioner I got is the band type. the ID of the tensioner and the generator are both about 4 3/8 " so I guess the sizes match. I do have to get the part that bolts on the head.they seem to be available on eBay , so I guess I am good to go .

I rarely see the other tensioner parts on fleabay, brother. There are some, but not the right ones. Later Ford 5000 and 6000 tractors used a tensioning arm too but not the same setup and it won't work. You almost have to find someone parting out an old 2N with a blown engine and see if you can salvage the entire generator with tensioning brackets but be sure you specify you want all the parts including the engine head bracket piece. That's one of my pet peeves about fellas who part out tractors on fleabay -they have no clue what they are selling and thus always advertise parts as being for 9N, 2N, and 8N models when in fact some are exclusive to each model only. These guys often hire kids or inexperienced wrench hands to dismantle a tractor, take pictures, then list on the popular auction sites. 99% of the time parts like the head bracket get left behind or discarded.
