Oil plug issue

I am in the process of completing my first oil change on my 8n ('51, side mount, 6 volt). When I removed the old plug to drain it, I noticed it did not have the screen attached. Luckily I planned ahead and had ordered a new one anyway. When I went to put the new plug in, I noticed it wouldn't go in. Crawled under the tractor and this is what I found. I assume this piece inside is supposed to line up with the hole? If so, would I be able to just pry it back into place?

Got it. Won't try and force it over. Any guesses on how it got moved over in the first place?

How do I go about properly moving it back into place? I'm guessing its not a simple procedure??

It may be an aftermarket replacement or possibly repaired by a previous owner. You need access to the entire tube to bend it without damaging it. I suggest you leave well enough alone unless you are just looking for a reason to remove the oil pan ;-);-)

That was a thought I had.... Just save my new plug with screen for now and put the old one back on. I'm sure one day I will have the oil pan
off for some other repair issue then I can work it back into place and put the new plug on.

I just had the same experience. I was able to pry the tube far enough to line up with the oil pan hole. Looking back, that may have been foolish. (I have a PHD from the School of Trial and Error.) It was risky but it worked for me (this time). Just be aware of the possibility of doing more damage to the tube.

wow!

I've seen em off center by as much as a quarter inch.. enough that you can coax the screen on to them at an angle.. but yikes.. that's the worst one i've seen.

I only had to move mine 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Yours is about an inch off. Too risky, even for me! ;-)

I had the same situation about 12 years ago but mine was only off about 1/2". I noticed that my drain plug did not have a screen so bought a new plug with screen, Moved pickup over and installed plug with screen. Started up and KNOCK, KNOCK KNOCK. Took out new plug. bent pickup back and used old plug. That old plug has been in there for over 30 years and still in there now. Screen is not really needed IMO. Leave as is.
