49 8n rusty hood

I have most of my 49 8N repaired and painted. All but the hood. The primary point of rust is between the inner frame and the skin. There are a few pinholes through the skin. I would be interested to here how others have addressed this. Would I be better to post this in the bodywork forum?

Disassemble to the max possible and sand blast to bare metal. Weld up the pinholes and any other damage, grind to shape and prime with a good epoxy primer. You have good heavy gauge steel to work with so it's easier than most automobile body welding repairs. Once the rust damage is repaired apply fillers/glaze/primers as required to get a smooth, straight finished surface and paint.

I've had the same problem Ray, It was necessary to drill the spot welds and remove the inner frame in order to clean up the corroded areas. I cut out the rusted parts and spliced in new
sheet metal made from 0.040 sheet metal. Now for a light coat of body filler over the weld seam then reinstall the inner frame, prime and paint.

I second Dan's question: How did you do the metal forming? As common as this problem is with N Fords, you'd think someone would be making patch panels to sell (hint, hint).

This panel was almost completely rusted out. The guy that does a lot of sheet metal work for me welded in this section but I did not ask how he did it. It can be done. Could not see a trace of the work once the hood was completed.

I used a sheet metal brake to form the repair, it's probably wouldn't be the first choice of an experienced body man, but it's all I had available.
The result wasn't perfect, but close enough for me.
