Broken lift bar

Got my 8n stuck in a snow drift and broke
the lift arm getting it out, broke it in
the middle where it attaches to the chain
and lift arm. Any tricks to get it off
where it bolts to the tractor? It just
spins, it looks like it should unbolt
from the housing but does not losen and I
can't get a bite on the bolt so that I
can get any tork on the nut. The
alternative is to weld it while it is on
the tractor.

If you don't have huge hands, you can pull the PTO shaft out the back and reach in to hold the nut while you tighten the lift arm post - otherwise you'll have to drop an axle trumpet to get to it (which is what I had to do when one of mine worked itself loose).

If the "stud, or pin" is the one under the axle trumpet the only way to fix it correctly is to pull the left trumpet off the center section. It will leak oil if it is loose at all & possibly wear the hole out of round. By pulling the left trumpet you can check both pins and tighten them as needed. If you take the right trumpet off you can't get to the left pin. Not too hard of a job but you're dealing with some heavy parts. Best to have a repair manual for it and it will help you a lot. I have two 8Ns and one of them already has a loose pin and does leak. Sounds like I have some heavy duty maintenance to do when the weather improves, on both machines.

I believe there should be a cotter pin in the castle but and that may be tough to do through the
PTO shaft hole. I have heard that some people have been successful in going that route tho. GregNE

aven't tried that, but looks like right might be possible, but left looks less likely to these eyes.

Here is what it looks like inside

The 8N pins are tapered and the tighter they are the less chance of leak. It is best to remove the left trumpet to remove the gears. Tighten/replace both while in there.

so if you broke the lower lift arm, why did you try to take the shaft off it rides on?

was the nut stuck?

Yes, the nut would not come off. It is not leaking so for now, until the weather improves, I will get my neighbor to weld it while it is still on the tractor. I am also going to see if I can weld a support piece to reinforce.
