Changing oil

I recently acquired a '51 8N that had sat for 3 years. With new points and fresh gas it started easily. The old oil was as thick and black as crude. I let the engine run to warm up the oil and then drained it overnight. Would additional flushing of the oil pan be recommended to remove as much of the old oil as possible?

In addition to what Bruce said, I would short change the oil.
Run it with new oil, making sure it got good and hot several
times and then check/change it more often the first couple times.

Mine was the same way when I bought it a few winters ago. Quart low, nasty, thick and black. I added 1qt ATF and ran it several hours and couple times. After new oil, filter and cleaning the filter bowl the oil stayed clean all year, only slightly discolored or like tea. I change oil every winter and for the last 3 years its never dirty, it kind of boggles me how clean it stays through the year.

Ditto.. clean the canister. and after some good use, dump in some atf before the next oil change.

I use 15w40 in most of my machines now as well.

my opinion only,
be very careful of putting anything in the crankcase of this old tractor to clean and break loose the years of built up crud.

just warm it up good and change the oil, drive it awhile and change it again,

then just drive and enjoy your tractor, change it again on a routine schedule,
should be good to go.

I use shell rotella 15 w 40 oil, but if you live far north and the tractor sets out and you do not have a block heater, some tractors might be hard to start, turn over.

fwiw, my 2N was badly worn and burned oil. the oil looked burnt after only a few minutes of use. i rebuilt it, didn't flush anything - and after a year of use, the oil still looks like it just came out of the jug.

i use straight 30W in both of my tractors. i'm in michigan, it gets very cold here (16 as i type this), but i have no need to run it in this weather :)
