sleeve OD 0.90 vs 0.40

I have a 1945 2N *175035* that was rebuilt some time ago without new sleeves. I believe the pistons are Mercury 4 ring that were used in the bare block. I read in the archives that this was sometimes done. Was hard to start and used a lot of oil, but had lots of power once it started. I am pretty sure the block has not been bored out and hope I can just install .040" sleeves and go. If someone can tell me what the OD is for the .090" and .040" sleeves I will be able to measure the bore on my block and order the right kit.
Thanks for any assistance, Tom/Idaho

Tom..........yeah, the 4-ring pistons were an attempt to control oil burning. Surprizingly enuff, didn't work and caused a TAPPER in the cylinder hole. Yer gonna haffta bore the block enny hoo. Todays chrome plated 3-ring pistons seal better in castiron sleeves. You kenn have yer machine shop install the sleeves ...or... iff'n yer a DIY guy, use DRY ICE to shrink the sleeve to fit inna the block hole. .........HTH, the amazed Dell

The piston bore is 3.1875 so:

OD of .040 wall sleeves = 3.1875 + .040 + .040 = 3.2675
OD of .090 wall sleeves = 3.1875 + .090 + .090 = 3.3675

Keep in mimd those are nominal numbers and parts are never exactly as specified. If I was your machinist I would want the sleeves in hand before taking a boring bar to the block

Will need to bore the block to receive the .090 sleeves because the .040s won't work now that it has been run with the sleeves out. .040 sleeves would probably fall out.

Don't hold me to it but I have ran across a set up like that and the block was bored 0.80 to accept those pistons. I had it punched to use 0.90 sleves and moved on with life
