What kind of bolts hold the outer axles, spindles to the center axle. Are they just regular grade 8 bolts, I cant find them in the parts manual. My tractor looks like it just had some regular coarse thread grade 5 steel bolts? I will at least go back with grade 8. The bolts that were in mine were different diameters and lengths so I have nothing reliable to go by.

I have the same situation.
I think one of mine is coarse thread and the others are fine thread. If I replace them it will be with grade 8 fine thread just to be sure.

The OEM cap screws were p/n 350789-S8, 5/8-18 x 3.4". Use 5/8 x 3.5" as a replacement - grade 5 will work just fine as will grade 8. If you have the OEM bumper you need to substitute two that are 4" long because they are used to hold the bumper to the axle.

Agree that grade 5 is sufficient. Even grade
2 would be fine.
Consider the immense amount of weight or
pressure it would take to shear off even
grade 2 5/8" bolts.

FAPP shear strength of carbon steel is roughly 60% of tensile strength. For grade 5 that would be roughly 70 KSI per bolt ;-)

I have plenty of either 8 or 5 so I may as well use 8s. Things like this are where I tend to overthink things. I fly and restore antique aircraft for a hobby so everything has to be as nearly perfect as I can make it from the fabric work to the welding and I am doing this 8n for a yard tractor and I have to remind myself about 3 times a day " its just a tractor" Thanks for answering my sometimes dumb questions guys.

I gave up stocking grade 5 cap screws. The incremental cost of grade 8 is so small it's all I buy anymore...
