Bad news for me on buying points

I went to my parts store today to order side mount distributor
points. Took them the Standard Ignition part number like
always just so they didn't have to dig out the book.
FD-8081X No longer available.
They can get FD-8081 or 8081T, but not X.
The 8081T aren't SI, they're a cheaper brand. Non-vented.
I had them cross the Echlin number for premium vented points
too, it now crosses to the FD-8081 number. Guess I better stop
in at NAPA and see if they can still get them.

I really like the young guy working the counter, his dad owns
the store. Straight up great guys, the whole bunch.
I explained to him that they weren't the same and he was quite
interested in why the weren't. Same guy has told me before
that he would listen to anything I said about points for my
tractors because he had never installed a set in his lifetime.
Probably won't either.
They have newer vehicles and a diesel tractor.

"Anything change on the rear tire??????"

Yep, mostly my attitude! I aired it up and it went down again.
Soaped the whole tire, replace the valve stem and core, still
leaks but I haven't been able to find it. Of course, it's out in the
back barn where it's currently six degrees Fahrenheit.
So, I took the tire off and tossed it in the truck.
It'll be at the tire store tomorrow.

And yes, you can get them off by removing every other pie weight.
I have one extra removed because I was playing with the valve stem.

As you probably know, the part numbers ending in "T" are Standard Ignition's "value line", TruTech.

And Echlin points are made by SMP (Standard Ignition).

You are correct Bob. I'm hoping they have some in a warehouse.
My guess is the demand has faded to the point that they are only
going to make the cheaper versions.

Finding the highest quality points for a side mount is not as big of a deal to me as for a front mount. What I mean is the the side mount points can be changed in 5 mins. I gave up finding the better points for my side mount dist, the cheap set is going on 4 years now.

With the quality of points going down while the price goes up, this might be a good time to consider a Pertronix on that tractor. How many times do you need to change or adjust the points before it becomes a real pain?

I will check with my local NAPA guy and see, maybe they have a NOS set on their shelf. I usually just buy the ECHLIN brand at NAPA, p/n CS35 for the point set and the cam lube grease is ML1.

"this might be a good time to consider a Pertronix"

Thanks for the reminder!
I've got a new one hanging on the pegboard.
Pertronix sent it to me after the first one died within a week.
I was glad I still had my old points to put back in because even
thought they did a great job of standing behind their product,
I still had to wait on shipping for it to arrive.
Maybe I'll put it back in and save a good set of points as a backup.
I don't have enough EI units for all the other tractors though.

Just checked on line.

258 stores stock a set
NAPA SUPPLIER IN DISPUTANTA,VA HAS 940.

I'm slowly going EI on everything because of the problem of chasing down good quality points. Got one more to do. Last set of Standard points I bought was defective out of the box. That's when my 2nd 8N front mount got EI. The old points, 2 1/2 years old, about 250 hours, fried, got the new set, in a rush didn't notice that only about 1/2 the face were making contact. They lasted about 15 hours. I don't think they are selling enough points to where they really care about quality anymore.
