Leather back up on piston

Hey guys does the leather back up on the hyd. piston go on top of the oring or the bottom or which goes on first from the top of the piston? Thanks 46chief

Backup washer is just that, it goes on the opposite/back side of the O-ring from the side exposed to pressure. In other words, when installing piston O-ring will go into cylinder first followed by backup ring

Well the piston is horizontal so top and bottom is however your holding it. But as with any hydraulic seal the backup ring backs up the o ring so it goes behind the oring to hold the o ring against the pressure. Basically on the non oil side would be another way to say it

To expand a bit more on what Mark said, the back-up washer is basically a wiper, designed to wipe away dirt and crud before the piston moves. Hence, as you are looking at the cylinder in the horizontal plane, the piston inside the cylinder, the wiper/washer will be on the outside nearest you. Some fellas use the neoprene washer available at your CNH dealer, p/n 87051231, instead of the leather back-up washer but no evidence to support if any better than the leather.
