transmission noise

On my 1951 late 8n there is a noise coming from my transmission like the sound of a bad bearing. When I engage the clutch the noise stops. At first I taught it was a release or pilot bearing but I think the noise would come when I engage the clutch. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and what was found. I have the I/T FO4 Manual and some experience working on old tractors.

To test the pilot brg engine running clutch pressed trans in gear. Noise still not there its BRG time for the trans. Its not a bad job and a good one to learn on.

Could it be coming from the PTO? That would explain why the noise goes away when you engage the clutch.
