I have a front mount distribitor 8n that won't start, I have switched it to 12 volt and replaced carb. It runs when it wants and runs good, It has new points, plugs, wires and cap. gets gas good spark has oil and water. Turns over with no problem. tank is full and all cyclinders are firing. any help would be appreciated

Is the little spring that closes the flap on the choke butterfly still there?

If it is missing it will not choke good and make it hard to start.

HAve you checked the fuel flow through the carb and out the drain plug in bottom of bowl? a pint in 2 to 3 minutes is required.

(quoted from post at 16:58:14 11/27/16) See tip # 13. You need to check spark and
fuel as soon as it stops, not 5 minutes
later.

good
I managed to get my 8n started. it is parked on dirt in my barn, but it took a hour to get it started and before that i had to put a rocket heater in front of it and it was still hard to start. when i had it idling the gage on the dash was just over zero on charging, then when i gave it the gas the needle when all the way to the right. it never did that before. a year ago i converted it to 12 volt and it worked fine

did your conversion include a 1 wire alternator or 3 wire? folks say the 1 wire won't self-excite and start charging until the RPMs get to a certain point. once that point is reached, it should continue to charge until u shut the tractor off. hopefully, that's all u were seeing there.

in any case, tho, it sounds like u have other issues to fix. a non-charging alternator won't prevent u from starting the tractor unless your battery is low on charge because of it.

after re-reading your post, it may indeed have been a weak battery preventing u from starting. easy way to test - before u try to start it again, put a charger on that battery and make sure it's topped up with charge first.

if u still have trouble starting it after that, the problem is not likely to be your alternator.

weak battery replaced it, wasn't real bad but it is running now thanks for the help
