looking for adjustable steering box for my '48 8N

I need to replace my steering box since I can't get it properly adjusted. I see the later model 8N adjustable boxes come up on Ebay. What do I need to look for or ask about on these Ebay boxes to minimize risks?

I just searched the YT classifieds, but nothing came up. Any other suggestions on where to look for one?

thanks

Also, what is a reasonable price range? It's not urgent that I get one and can be a LITTLE patient.

No shortage of sources. New ones start around $550 (YT) and go up quickly. Used OEM boxes run $350+ on eBay.

I'll contact you about that one, Hobo. Thanks.

Hobo, I got the following when emailing you:

I tried a couple of times.

The new replacement box's, in my opinion are Chinese junk. Had one blow up in less than a year on an Oliver 550 (Same replacement box as an 8N). The ball nut unit blew up and the upper and lower bearings let go. These bearings are NOT the same as the original box. I don't believe you can rebuild these boxes as I could not locate replacement parts. The adjusters on the sectors are also a different animal.

I found a used box on eBay for $100.00 and rebuilt it. Total cost including the box ended up around $200.00.

I picked up an adjustable 8N steering box from EBAY. In evaluating it, I can rotate the internals by pulling on the sector arms, and it feels pretty good, but there is a gritty sound/feel to the rotation.

I'm planning on taking it apart to clean and refurbish. Is there anything I should look for regarding this gritty feel?

thanks.

I have a used box that I might be able to get rid of as is (serviceable) or rebuilt with new bearings and seals.

Shipping may be an issue though. What is your general location?

My email is open.

Check out the upper and lower bearings and races. They may be pitted or worn. Also the preload on these bearings may be / have been too tight. This is adjusted with shims under the cover.
