Stuck oil filter

I recently picked up a nonrunning 8n and started doing maintenance. I am having difficulty removing the filter from the oil canister. It is so frozen that I pulled the handle off the filter while trying to remove it. I thought about running the tractor (assuming I can get it to start) for a while hoping that heating the oil would cause the filter to release. I am concerned that I might damage the engine if the filter is plugged up. Perhaps removing the canister completely and soaking it in solvent might work? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Take it off the tractor, clamp it in a vise, run two lag bolts into the filter and pull it out with two pairs of pliers.

These are NOT full flow oil filters which means that only a portion of the oil pressure is bled off and run through the filter.. Short term running of the tractor with NO oil filter would not harm a thing.

Hansky,

I've pulled that ring off myself in the past. . . no big deal.
Stick two wide bit screw drivers down a little between the canister and the filter, opposite each other and lever down against the canister edge.
Doesn't take much to get the filter moving up and you won't harm the canister edge if you're judicious in your application of the force.

Since its a non-runner at the moment, I would take it off and
soak it like you said. Then try turning the filter before trying
to yank/pry it out and possibly tearing it in two.
There are plenty of other things to do while its soaking.

You can try some mineral spirits. Pour enough in the canister to cover the while filter and let its et for a day or three then try to move it with a screwdriver. I'd try to rotate it first before pulling or prying straight out. Mineral spirits won't harm anything, it's what all the 'snake-oil' products contain anyway like MMO, Stabil, et al. and if you don't have any handy, use your charcoal lighter fluid -it's the same stuff too. Last resort would be to disconnect oil lines and remove entire housing and work on it on the kitchen table or workbench...there are several other things that need to be done before attempting to crank engine over since it's been setting for a long time.

Patrick,

I had not thought about trying lag bolts.
I'm thinking about using mineral spirits as
Tim mentioned and then installing the lag
bolts while the canister is still on the
tractor. I'm hoping that I can insert a
screwdriver horizontally between the two
bolts and then spin it loose.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Royse,

Spinning makes sense to me as I have already
broken the filter handle.

Thanks, I appreciate your suggestion.

I'll have the screwdrivers ready to help
budge the filter after letting the mineral
spirits work for awhile.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Duey. Good to know. I'm learning as I go. There's so much wrong with this 8n that it will be some time before I get it running. Time to invest in a mechanic's manual.
