Sherman Trans hole location on 2N

I'm in the process of purchasing a Sherman Step UP to put into one of my 2Ns just for the fun of it. I have seen the Smiths page for locating where the hole should go for the shifter to come threw BUT I believe the step up trans would have the hole in a slightly different location then the step up/step down transmission. Am I correct? Any help on measurement location would be greatly appreciated. Also other tips for installing a step up in a 9N/2N that's never had one it.

Step up only shifter shaft positions differently from step up/step down

When I installed step up in my 51 8N, to find where to drill the hole for the handle, I put the Sherman in the case with a couple bolts to hold it. Then took a pencil and rolled it around the shifter shaft, extending the pencil to make a circle on inside of bell housing. Drilled in center of circle with progressively bigger holes, then took an air die grinder and a good stone and enlarged the hole to size needed.

I T manual FO-4 has a section on the Sherman, including preload adjustment.

Ok thanks that's what I was thinking to do for the hole. Just wanted to check with someone that has done it. I got the manual. Thanks for the tips!

As said probably best to drill a pilot hole and go from there but if I remember correctly its 5 3/8" back from front of case and 5 1/2" down from top of case. Within the next few days I'll take a couple of measurements. Or since you are in Pa if you want to take a ride and measure them for youself you are more than welcome. I have 3 or 4 with step/up/downs in them.

Thanks Kirk! ! If you could take some measurements so it will give me a rough idea. What part of Pa are you in?

I just did a Sherman install (12/4/16). I had read your process, did the same thing and it worked just right. I would advise bolting in the Sherman, marking the hole center from the inside, then pilot drill from the inside. Then use a hole 1" hole saw from the outside, grind from the outside to enlarge to 1 1/4" and true-up the hole.
