Clutch brake on left side

The 9N/2N/8N I grew up on was a 3 speed and had the clutch and the left brake on the left side. The right brake didn't work so it took some real tap-dancing to run the clutch and the brake at the same time. When was the left brake moved to the right side of the tractor or I guess what I'm really asking is was this a 9N, a 2N or and 8N?
Thanx,
Dan

they moved the left brake to the right for the *N. yours was a 9 or a 2 - the 8N came with a 4 speed.

this page might help u narrow it down further, depending on how many details u remember:

9N or 2N. 8N had both brakes on the right and a four speed.
When you push the clutch all the way down on a 9N/2N it
should engage the brake also. There is also a hump in that
brake lever. Reach down with your hand and pull it up. Works.

Lots of great pictures to boot! :)

Or use a hand brake maybe?

No, it didn't have a hand-brake. It didn't have a breather on the right side either. It did have a tool box mounted on the left fender - I rode many an hour on that with my Daddy farming! thanx

i'm trying, but i'm afeared that real live winter might be here soon, and if u put any stock in how much fat a deer has being an indicator of the coming winter temps, this one could get rude.

fingers crossed, i'm hoping the deer picked up a copy of the wrong almanac this year.

If your tractor was a three speed than it was a 9n or 2n. Brake was moved to the other side with the start of the 8n.
If you had good brake pads and your brake and clutch was properly adjusted (on the 9n/2n) then when you apply the clutch it would also apply pressure to the left brake stopping the tractor.
In all my years of owning 9n/2n's I have only found one that works as it should and is a real treat rather than trying to shift your foot back and forth between the clutch and brake. Although I do have a Sherman hand brake on my 2n I can understand,if everything was adjusted properly, why they weren't a big seller.

I read on this page long time ago that that hump was to keep ones foot from sliding off and hitting the tire?????

I've read that too Steve, and that may very well have been the original purpose.

"In all my years of owning 9n/2n's I have only found one that works as it should"

Not my experience. I have six 9/2Ns and all are adjusted so that when you push the clutch pedal down the left brake also engages.

Sorry Harold what I meant was tractors I bought before I started working on them. Most people don't even know you can adjust them. Then again it's very rare that I'm buying a running driving tractors.

My experience also. Once you get the brakes rebuilt and the pedals adjusted they wrok well.

4th year in a row I ask 'what are brakes?' Every time I come up with the money for them something else needs it. This year truck needed replacing.

Basically similar to the ones that ford used on their early 9n'2n industrials only it was a little easier to attach because of the frame on the industrial. The one you show should need to move the brake rod from the left to the right. The one brake pedal should control both brakes.
