points that don't fit

I read on here all the time about points that don't fit right but I have never had any problem until today. I always thought it was because a always buy blue streak points from either napa or this sight. Well blue streak points from this sight and they didn't fit right I had to file the slot as well as the upright piece that the contact is attached to for it interfered with the head of the screw. Having 3 front mnt ns for the last 12 yrs I have done more than few tuneups and this is the first time and sadly probably not the last. End of rant.

No but no noticeable play. I did replace bushings in one tractor but not this one. I couldn't get .015 no matter what I did until I filed the slot. Not only that they didn't close square to one another without some tweaking. Like I said never had trouble with points like that even going back into the 50s.

I had that problem with the last set of points I bought. Was in a rush and didn't notice it till they failed in short order. Was only making contact about 1/2 the face. Now that 8N is also EI!

Any chance that you could measure the cam & shaft and post the results?

I'd hate to think that quality points are no longer quality points!

The pic is of one of my front mount distributors with a good cam, new bushings & Echlin points. Gap on the points is .030, twice the spec.

Factory Specs:

Shaft top .4367 / .4370
Shaft Bottom .8625 / .8630
Cam Flats .789 / .791
Cam Lobes .869 / .871
Base Tang .177 / .178

I also had a new out of the box Blue Streak set of points that the contacts did not align up neither face to face (parallel) nor full contact to full contact (when closed they were offset.

The last set of Blue Streak points I set up hit .015 with no trouble, but had to file the timing slot a bunch to get the timing where it is supposed to be. This rotates the bolt on top so it becomes more difficult to ensure a good connection with the coil. So far, opening the spring coils on one side works ok. This will be the reason if I finally decide to spend the money and go breakerless on all my distributors.

I can't but with the faces of the points don't match, well that tells the whole story there. Even "quality" points are no longer quality! Pretty simple really. Demand dictates just how much a company is going to dump into making and selling quality parts. Profit margin shrinks too much and it's time to have someone else make them. Now some here claim that those points will last 10 or more years. And depending on how much it's run that's most likely true. So say there are still 500K or so engines around that use the front mount dizzy. That about 50K sets of points a year minus the ones that have been converted to front mount. Not much demand there. So no shock that they are letting quality slip.

Last set I took off my 8N were offset and barely touching. No wonder it barely ran. These were cheapo TSC points that were dead on right when put on. Got new ones off this site and they seem to be OK for now, this was a few years back however.

The faulty points I got were Standard brand this past spring.

I don't care how good the bushings are when you take the point set and close the points and the contacts are 1/2 off from a good match that's defective points. Like I said I failed to notice it because of being in a rush, till they failed in short order.
