8N whines and won't start

Yesterday I'm on my 8N and I stop it. I go back to start it again and it whines but starts. Then I finished what I was doing and decided to stop it to see if it whined again. So I push down on the button to start it and it just let out a big whine and wouldn't start.

The whine is coming from the solenoid or starter I can't tell. It just whines and whines when I push down the button and never starts.

Any ideas?

Yes.

Your bendix isn't engaging.

6 volt or 12 volt?

That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49. Or get it load tested.)

2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)

4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

5. A dirty/greasy starter shaft.

6. A bad bendix.

1. Battery is good

2. I cleaned the positive but not the negative will try negative when I get out there.

3. Cables are good.

4. Do you have a picture so I know? I'm sure it's dirty

5. This is very likely. Which shaft are you talking about.

6. I think this is the least likely.

" 1. Battery is good"

How do you know that? Load test? Hydrometer? Voltage drop test?

" 2. I cleaned the positive but not the negative will try negative when I get out there"

That would be a good idea. Cleaning one & not the other is a waste of time. It's a circuit.

" 5. This is very likely. Which shaft are you talking about."

" 6. I think this is the least likely."

As you have a 12 volt tractor, I'd say this is a very likely possibility.

Sounds like the starter drive is not engaging.

Load test the battery and verify properly sized cables first.
