8N oil pressure

I finished my tractor repairs and restoration project and it runs fine. I noticed in looking at the gauges when it was idling that the oil pressure was
about 50 at the top of the gauge. Anything to be alarmed about?

Alarmed? Probably not if the gauge goes to zero when off.
I would seriously doubt the accuracy though.
Hook a known good gauge to it and check it.
 
The original 9N, 2N, and 8N Oil Pressure gauges were all 0-50 PSI units. The 0-80 gauge was introduced with the advent of the bigger OHV engines. When an "N" engine is first cranked over, oil pressure should read around 35-40 PSI at idle. As the engine gets warmed up it will slowly drop a bit and then when under load, when you start working it, drop a tad more. Pretty much normal operating procedure but with a worn out engine you will see oil pressure drop down to 5-10 PSI at idle, but may read higher with throttle up. Is your system overfilled? Capacity on the Ford Tractor 119 cu/in 4 cylinder flathead engine is 5 quarts plus 1 quart in the filter housing.

Possibly. I would do as Royce suggested and put a mechanical gauge on it that reads over that to verify pressure. I do not use vehicle gauges to determine values for diagnostic purposes. With oil pressure, you need hot and cold readings both at idle and 2,000 rpm. If that is the cold idle reading and at 2,000 RPM doesn't increase over max. pressure I would be fine with it. I have seen metal spin-on filters balloon due to high pressure from stuck pressure limiter valves.
 
I have a problem with my 2N. No oil pressure at all if I let it set for an hour now. I put in a oil repair kit in the front main cap/oil pump part. New gears and driven shaft/sprocket. I primed it with oil, installed the pan and I got 30 psi oil pressure. I let it sit for awhile and start it back up, no oil pressure. I removed the pump and primed it again, put pan back on and I got 20 psi oil pressure. Let it sit for an hour and start back up ........ no oil pressure ???
Can anyone tell me what is going on with this?

Still thinking about the oil pressure symptoms, but you don't
need to remove the oil pan to prime the pump. There is a plug
in the front of the engine that holds the over pressure relief
valve and spring in. You can remove them and add heavy weight
oil to prime the pump. Don't lose the spring.

Tell us more about what you have done to the engine.
 
Thanks. When I start the engine the oil pressure gauge shows about 40-50 and pretty much stays up there when I crank up the rpm. I put the tractor in storage for the winter but in the spring I'm planning on hooking up a known good gauge just to be sure. According to the gauge, the pressure never drops low. The oil is full, not over filled. The engine uses no oil that I can see, doesn't smoke at all. I'm really happy with the way it turned out, looks good.

Thanks Royse. I still have the front end off and just a few bolts holding the pan on. I removed that relief plug, spring and plunger, made me a oil squirting bottle with tube and squirted an ounce or so of oil in and put plunger spring and plug back in tight. Started it up and had oil pressure. That is very easy and a lot less work. I'm putting all bolts back on the pan, put front end on and I want to drive it.
2N tractor was given to me. The guy told me that he stripped a couple head bolt studs. I repaired with thread serts and put head back on, started it up about a week ago and no oil pressure so I pulled front end and pan off, put in a oil pump kit. I did see that there was a lot of clearance between oil pump gears and the oil pump housing before putting pickup tube back on. I pored oil into the top of pump and noticed that the oil travels down into the pump fast. I think the clearance is too much to maintain any oil in the system, gears are dry of oil and will not pickup the oil in the pan when started up after sitting for awhile. I will have to pull engine to have a new pump align bored and I decided to wait on that for now. It gets 20 to 30 psi oil pressure now after priming the pump thru the relief plunger.
