Pushbutton Starter Wiring for 9N

We've recently inherited a 9N Ford Tractor and we're new to tractors. We've purchased a new wiring harness from Steiner (along with other new parts) and we've been rewiring things. The push button starter (it is on the dash) is confusing to us. There are 2 wires coming out of the push button starter. The wiring diagram I've included only shows one wire from the push button starter to the small tab of the solenoid. My questions:

1. Where should the 2 wires of the push button starter be connected to?

2. Should the other wire of the push button starter be connected to the ammeter? This is actually what the Steiner instructions indicate, but conflicts with the other diagrams.

Any help help or advice would be appreciated.

there is no solenoid on a 9N/2N tractor nor on the diagram which you posted. Maybe you can post the Steiner diagram?

Here is what we purchased:

Is this not what is connected to the push button start on the diagram that I posted? If not, what is connected to the push button start on the the diagram that I posted?

That would be incorrect for a 9N tractor. The 9N would have a simple starter switch on the backside of the column which is actuated by the push button neutral interlock on the front side:

No solenoid! The push button starter switch has a battery cable plus a smaller wire connected to one terminal and big cable on the other connects to starter motor, just like in the diagram that you first posted.

9Ns do not have solenoids. The early 9Ns have a dash mounted starter button, like in Del's picture. The cable from the starter switch goes directly to the lug on top of the starter. Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR" and find the early 9N diagram.

Thanks everyone for the great input. It is now clear what the original diagram I posted has in it and how I should proceed. Thanks Del for the picture - it made everything so understandable.

Maybe for you ;-) So do you have one of the very early 9N's (SN before 14500) that does not have the safety interlock or a later one that does have the interlock? The switches are not the same.

Yep, Del's great photo has 'em covered for 1939-1940, but for the rest of 1940-1947, before 8N, these might help a person:
