Re: 8n sidemount timing

Flywheel has two marks 180? apart, think the reason is some power unit applications need to have timing hole in opposite side of flywheel housing.

Remove #1 sparkplug, hold finger OVER hole, have a helper slowly crank the engine 'til you feel compression pressure against your finger, then watch carefully for mark to come into view, that will be the correct mark, mark it with a dab of paint.

FO-4 says the reason is that one can check running timing by using any spark plug wire.

eeps you from installing the flywheel wrong, too.

Not sure what you mean by "What Gives?" but what i think you're asking is, why is the distributer mounted on the side? The early 8Ns had a front mount and the later 8Ns had a side mount. Exactly when
that occurred (year/serial number) will be answered by someone smarter than me on this forum.

i thought he was asking how he could have what appears to be a side mount engine without a timing hole.

Maybe you should post a picture of what you have. There were front mount blocks that had magnetos.

And I have a side mount block with a magneto, an industrial engine actually.
A picture or two would really help like Hcooke says.

This is a picture of my side mount block with a magneto.
