Carb issues

I've had issues with the carb on my ford 8n (sn 16899?) - replaced governor and had to run with choke on constantly to keep running. Took air intake off carb and gas came running out. I took off the carb, removed the halves and have a couple questions:

1. The choke relief valve is supposed to have a spring to keep the relief valve closed - I'm not seeing any spring - (see pics).

2. The float needle valve has a clip that hangs on the float. I'm not sure I'm putting it back together correctly - the float seems to set very high (> 1/4")and it appears the needle valve/clip is holding the float higher than it should be, also, float doesn't sit parallel to the carb body (see pics). I'm hoping somebody can verify that I've got the float needle valve installed correctly before I go bending the float.

I'm very unfamiliar with carbs and don't really want to mess anything up. I've tried to identify the carb, but, not getting clear markings on the body (see forum thread: http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=nboard&th=996199). Would like to fix these issues, but, think I need to get the correct carb model to get the repair parts.

Any assistance in verifying that I've identified these issues and how to correct them would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever the reason, the float is not right. I would check the needle seat and make sure it does not have two gaskets under it and that it is tight. I don't remember using the clip on the needle but I have CRS these days.

Get in contact with Royse. He rebuilds them reasonably and test runs before shipping back to you. Or might be able to talk you through it.

Thank you for the insights, me thinkest I'm suffering from CRS as well. In any event, I bent the float to get it parallel and 1/4" gap and put the buggar back on the tractor. Tinkered around a bit and found that the fuel valve was clogged - so, drained the gas, removed the valve, cleaned it up, put it back on. Then I found that my nifty fuel line filter was not allowing the fuel to gravity drain to the carb - off it came and put a straight fuel line back in place - to be changed back to metal fuel line later. Then the tractor started - YEAH!!! But, it's backfiring like crazy. So, in all my tinkering, I did take off the front mount distributor to set the points. Could I have the distributor on 180 degrees off? It could also be all the settings on the carb are messed up as well.

Onward with the tinkering.

You ask......:" Could I have the distributor on 180 degrees off? It could also be all the settings on the carb are messed up as well. "

Answers....: #1...NO....BUT, you prob. put the sparkplug wires in the distrib wrong. Trace the wires from each plug, to the right cap hole.!!!

#2... Yeh, you are prob. right on the carb settings being messed up!!!!
Try this setting instruction!!

So ? When is the Grande (re) Opening of the new improved Carb Shack ? That Royce has had his hand in your pocket long enough ! ;^)

I totally agree! 8^)

Sorry to be late to the party guys, I was out working on my cab
wiring. Anyway, I agree with Gary, double check the firing order.

Toejam, if that doesn't help, contact me as RESLLS mentioned.
I don't mind helping you with it over the phone or whatever.
The spring you're missing on the choke flap came in the rebuild
kit if you bought a good kit. If not, I have a bunch of them.

I checked the firing order, it's ok. I'm going to tackle adjusting the carb tomorrow. Don't know how critical the relief valve spring is, the choke isn't really on all the time anyway. Got several printouts on how to adjust, so, tomorrow is another learning opportunity.

No offense meant Royse. I know that you do good stuff. Since Gary and Leslie are having their problems, I like to push Gary's chain.

No offense taken Bob! We have a similar sense of humor it
seems and I took that post as a compliment to Gary.
There is nothing wrong with complimenting him on all the great
work he has done and the help he has given over the years.

P.S. it would be much more effective to "pull" his chain.
Unless you can get him to weld all the links together.
He has nothing better to do any ways. ;)
