water pump question

Hello everyone. After following this site for a few months and reading the expert advice given here I decided to ask some questions. I own a 1947 2n ford tractor that just had the water pump go out and I was wondering if I should have the pump rebuilt or buy a new one. I noticed that new ones go from about 35 to 50 dollars and I had two quotes for rebuilt pumps. One was for 65 dollars with a trade in and the other was for 80 dollars plus the cost of the parts.

I would get the new one. I wouldn't buy the rebuilt one. I've had a lot of trouble with rebuilt pumps for cars, trucks, and tractors over the years. I would consider rebuilding the old pump. I would take it a part first and make sure the housing was good before I ordered parts.

I would have your OEM style pump rebuilt if you can find someone to rebuild it.

The last new 8N water pump that I bought had thicker mounting ears than the OEM design, requiring replacement of the mounting studs.

I was lucky enough to find a remaining rebuilt pump at NAPA that fit without any issues.

I avoid Chinese made aftermarket parts at nearly all costs.

I needed a water pump for my 8n this past summer. The old one was very wobbly on the shaft while running. It it lets go it will destroy your radiator. I ordered a new one. When it came the mounting lugs were to thick and the overall height with the pulley installed was higher than the old one. As a result the fan belt was no longer in line with the crank pulley and the alternator. I found out it was made in India and a real crudely made part. As a result I had the original Henry Ford pump rebuilt at a company that rebuilds water pumps and I couldn't be happier. And yes if you take your time you can replace it without removing your hood. Place a piece of cardboard between the fan and radiator to keep from crushing the radiator fins. Good luck.

(quoted from post at 19:51:37 11/15/16) Hello everyone. After following this site for a few months and reading the expert advice given here I decided to ask some questions. I am reasonably confident that thousands of new Tisco/Sparex replacement water pumps have been installed with little to no problem. I did exactly one (purchased from Just 8N's and probably a Tisco product) almost 15 years ago with absolutely zero issues. YMMV with the current offerings and anytime you buy something there is a chance you get a dud.

I have been doing this sort of stuff for 50+ years and the possibilty of a replacement part having a slightly thicker mounting flange requiring longer bolts/studs but otherwise perfectly servicable wouldn't worry me a wit. Truth be told, if possible I prefer using new fasteners when installing new parts and if push comes to shove I own several grinders ;-)

If it's an OEM pump, have it rebuilt.

I?ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed.

If you do not have a local rebuild shop, give these guys a call for a quote & shipping info:

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

I pretty sure the pump is OEM.I talked to the implement dealer that quoted me the price of 60 dollars plus trade in and told him I'll bring it in so he could check the condition of the old pump. If I get a rebuilt pump that is OEM in exchange, I'll go this route.
