need alittle help for the old gal. starts up fine, once its warmed up good and under a load. it starts missing and chugging.

As R Geiger said, check the points. And means you need to pull the distributor to do that, set the timing. If that doesn't work, post back for help adjusting the carb.

(quoted from post at 12:18:57 11/10/16) I would check and regap those points, don't assume they are good.

I have a 49 8N. I had to adjust the points almost every month for various reasons. Got tired of doing that in order to use it and went to electronic ignition. Runs like a champ with no needed adjustments of any kind. Save yourself some time and make the change, you will eventually.

I haven't had the distributor off my 2N in 8 months. It runs so good it's beginning to scare me. I'd like to see what the points and rotor look like but I'm afraid to take it apart. Im a firm believer in " IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT " .

Hey Terry, how ya been?

What does it do after it starts missing and chugging?
Does it then die and have to cool off before restarting?

If missing/chugging is all it does, I'd double check the points too.
Especially if they have a plastic rubbing block.

My 2N hasn't had new points, nor had them adjusted in over
four years. The points in it do not have a plastic rubbing block.
They are Standard brand BlueStreak part # FD-6769X
Same as a front mount 8N, about $16 a set locally.

If you have to get in there more than once a year to add a
little lube to the cam there is something else wrong.

"My 2N hasn't had new points, nor had them adjusted in over
four years."

same here. got mine about 4 years ago, haven't ever touched the points. granted, that's probably only about 100 - 120 hours of use.

i"m leaning more towards carb adjustment. i bought a brand new fm distributor 3 months ago. but i"ll check the points just to be sure. Royse, i was tilling the garden yesterday and by the time i was done, it started acting up! i never did restart it, it never died. have some brush hogging to do before the snow fly"s , want to plant some switchgrass for my whitetails. been a great year so far, lots of bucks. took this 8 pt a few weeks back.

Dinner is served! Nice looking buck.

When your tractor acts up do you get any black smoke?
If not, does pulling the choke part way out help?

not sure royse, i parked it within minutes after i was done tilling. i have both adjustment screws turned one full turn. which way should it to make an adjustment.

I set the main adjuster out 1 1/2 turns, start the engine
and let it warm up, then run it at near full throttle and turn
the main adjuster in until the engine sound changes.
Back it out 1/4 turn from that point and leave it for now.

Idle the engine down, then snatch the throttle open.
It should accelerate immediately and smoothly.
If it coughs, open the main screw 1/4 turn at a time until
it doesn't cough. If you get past two full turns something's
not right in the carb. I have seen them run Ok at 2 1/2
or 3 full turns but they weren't quite right inside.

Next set the throttle at idle and adjust the speed to
~400-450 RPM. Without a proofmeter close counts.
Once there, adjust the idle adjuster for smooth idle.
Usually somewhere between 1/8 and 1 turn.
Remember that this adjustment changes air flow so
it is backwards. In is rich on this adjustment.

I then repeat the test of snatching the throttle open
from idle. If the tractor is running well enough at this
point, do the same test under load.

You may find that each adjustment affects the other so
you have to do them all several times to get it dialed in.

Glad to hear you got it going Terry.
I spent most of today getting things ready for snow too.
Nice sunny day here, but that wind was sure chilly!
I assume it was about the same up your way.
