Starter or ring gear

1952 8N. Just changed all fluids, full tune-up. Started better
than ever. Then did 12 volt conversion, started better yet.
Then pulled manifold to replace valve cover gaskets. Installed
manifold with new gaskets, no sealant. Installed new exhaust
pipe/muffler.
It was a little slower to fire. Put Dearborn loader back on,
ran for about an hour. Started this morning, again a little slow
to fire. Killed it, then when restarting it may have backfired
once. Now starter only spins. access to starter through loader
frame is not friendly, moving non-running tractor to remove
loader is less so. Hoping for starter issue, much easier to
remedy than ring gear.
Ideas if starter or worse? could slow to fire be intake Mani
leak? What goo to use on Mani gaskets? Thanks.

i'd think starter way more likely culprit than ring gear.

i put a new manifold on a couple of years ago. right or wrong, i used no goop on the gaskets, and have had no problems.

Start with the simple stuff first: see tip # 60 to charge the battery, and then clean all the connections. You need a strong battery to engage the bendix. If that doesn't work, use a BF screwdriver in the timing hole to move the flywheel 3 inches in case you have a flat spots. If that doesn't work, see tip # 36 to pull the starter.
