Coil, 6 or 12 volt?

I know I'm showing my electrical wisdom here - or lack of it - but is there a way to tell a used 6 volt coil from a 12 volt if it doesn't have any markings?
Thanks

f you have the capability to more or less accurately measure the primary resistance, it will be about 1.6 Ohms for a coil designed to run on 6v and double that for a coil designed to run on 12v. Of course there are no absolutes, so you have all those "other" coils that are intended to run on 12v in conjunction with a resistor and even on 6v with a resistor and may have resistances as low as One-half an Ohm.

Yes.

With an ohm meter.

Square or round coil?

Thanks Jmor. I have some marked 6 volt, 1 marked "12 volt use w/external resistor", & 2 or 3 w/no markings. I am converting my 960 to 12 volt. Do I need a resistor to use this 12 volt "w/resistor" coil?

hat is what it says on it & it means what it says.

(quoted from post at 19:29:44 10/26/16) Forgive my ignorance (again!), but how then does it differ from a 6 volt coil?
am not at all sure that there is a difference, but if so, we will not likely ever know, as all those engineers are probably long gone. For most in not all uses, they are interchangeable. Certainly have been for me. Just select resistor to provide 4 amps steady state or a tad under and all will be well.

Lynn.........'stedda futtzn' around, byte the bullet and buy an NEW round can coil, IC-14 from NAPA. $20, cheap. simple, eh?........the amazed Dell
