The (neo) is actually Buna-N rubber and will be at the solid end or pressure end of your piston and the leather will be as the name implies, "backing" it up, toward the open end of your piston.

Check out this video 8 minutes in:

All I ask in return is that you are gentler with that backup washer than she was . . . no need to stretch it unnecessarily putting it on! :D

And whatever you do, don't beat on your cylinder mount bolt and bore leading threads like she did!

Cheers,
Terry

Most use the better piston, O-Ring, and backup washer introduced with eth Jubilee. They are better than the old three-steel ring piston. The part numbers are:

NAA-530-B.......................Piston
NAA-533-A.......................Rubber O-Ring
NAA-473-A.......................Leather Backup Washer/Wiper
or, as an alternative to the leather, some use the neoprene wiper available at your CNH dealer. Part Number is 87051231.

I have found the best method of installing the leather wiper is to fill a small container like a clean soup can with clean, fresh hydraulic oil -the same kind you're going to refill with - and soak the leather washer in it under a lamp. I used a 150 watt flood lamp but be cautious you don't get too hot. Once it gets heated up, it is more pliable and should slip right over the new piston. Work it into the groove all around so no excess sticks up. Parts can be found at any Ford Tractor parts supply house like nnalert or Steiners...
