Smoked my coil

Have an 8N front mounted distributor. Running 12v with electronic ignition. Need to order a new coil and whatever resistor(s). What resistors do I need? Thank you.

the extra resistor is needed to protect a 6 volt coil from 12 volts. if u buy a 12 volt coil, u don't need an extra resistor.

"Not true with a front mount (square) coil. You still need the original ballast resistor."

sorry if i wasn't clear enough. that's why i said [i:fff3b18861]extra[/i:fff3b18861] resistor - namely, one that didn't come with the tractor from the factory.

I am not familiar with "suppression plug wires". Do you know if the set they offer here at Yesterday Tractor are suppression wires? I'll just order them and be sure. Thank you.

" Do you know if the set they offer here at Yesterday Tractor are suppression wires?"

Don't know.

Pertronix probably has them.

I found out the hard way w/ EI on my 1950 MG. shortly after that, someone here on this board had the same problem w/ their 8N & got the same advice.

suppression wires use a carbon conductor, as opposed to copper. i see a few sets list here for 8Ns, most of which specify copper core, which is what u do not want.

this set might be what u do want, but i'd call and ask to be sure.

(quoted from post at 15:57:19 10/24/16) Pertronix EI? If you aren't using
suppression plug wires, you will let the
smoke out of the EI.

How long did it take to let the smoke out? I've run my 49 8n with the Pertronix EI with copper wires for over a year first time I've hear this.

It only took about 500 miles with the MG. I
don't know how long it took for the guy here
that had it happen on his N.

It's the rfi from the wires.

dunno where you gittchur info. The 4-nipple front mount dizzy absolutely requires copper core sparkie wires. NO CARBON STRING sparkie wires. It also requires the ballast resistor. NO ARGUE!!! You kenn gitt a modern 12-volt square can coil but still requires the infamous ballast resistor. Points are still 0.015 and are best set on the kitchen table. Iff'n yer havin' sparkie problems, try polishing the points by clampin' the corner of $1-bill (cheap) between the points and pull. I'm NOT against transistor ignition, I built one in 1963 fer my 1956 Dodge D-500, cousin to the mighty Chrysler 300. .........HTH, the amazed Dell

If the Pertronix is so sorry that it requires carbon wires to survive, then I say stick with points & condenser or wait for a better SSI to come along! Pitiful!

" dunno where you gittchur info."

The info came directly from Pertronix Tech Support in an email to me. Here is a cut & paste:

" The Ignitor is a modern system that is affected by the RFI noise that the wires emit. We do recommend using suppression wires because of this. You can buy a set of universal wires and make a set for your application.' We have seen many failures due to using non-suppression type spark plug wires. "

In my reading reply's to other questions, I'm slightly confused.
I ordered the 12v coil(measures 2.7ohms) the resistor (.6 ohms per the description) and the carbon wires.
I calculate 3.3 ohms resistance and a current of 3.63 amps. This drops 2.17 volts across the resistor and 8.91 volts to the coil.
Am i safe??
Thank you for your help.
