9N won't charge

I rarely ask questions but I have one that may stop me from spending money I don't have. I have a 9N with the single wire generator and the round can 'cutout'. My Son-in-Law jump started it with his pickup truck and I'm wondering if this ruined the generator or the cutout. She's still 6 volt and the battery had gone bad so he thought he was being helpful. He DID get her started but now? No charge. I checked the single wire out of the generator and it's the same as the battery.

How did your SIL jump it?? Polarize the generator by jumping around the cutout. Should see a spark when you do that. If that doesn't work jump around the cutout when it is running.

Digital or analog meter? (see tip # 47)

I used an 'analog' meter from the 70's. My SIL doesn't recall just how he hooked up his truck. It could have been positive ground but more likely Negative ground. I just want to know if the round can cutout would 'save' my system from being destroyed.

I assume his truck the battery is 12 volts. Did he jump the 6ix volt battery in your tractor (dangerous) or did he jump the starter motor? I doubt if it "destroyed" your system. Did you polarise the generator as I suggested? Did you see a spark? You can test the generator by slipping off the fan belt. Run a wire from the non grounded side of the battery to the single terminal on the back of the generator. If the generator motors, it should be good.

Thank you for the replies. I haven't been able to do any of the suggestions, yet, due to illness. When I'm able, I will tell you all what happened.

Okay, I finally got back to it yesterday. I tried the 'motor' idea with the generator and it worked. Then, and I'd swear I'd done this before, I polarized it via the cutout and generator. Did it twice as I wanted to get that 'warm and fuzzy' feeling. Anyway, it now charges like it's supposed to. Again, thanks for the great advice.
