Results - 8N Won't Start

Last week I went out to my 52 8N to mow some shooting lanes for sighting in a muzzleloader. Checked oil, water, turn on fuel, hit the button...nothing. Solenoid clicking.

Gave up, shot in front yard and put battery on charge overnight. I did absolutely no troubleshooting. Long story longer, went on vacation over the weekend and when we got back I needed to move the chicken coop.

Retrieved said battery and tried again with the same result. Get battery out of nearby truck, same result. Solenoid clicking.

Remove all wiring, battery cable and solenoid. Making it clean, bright and tight commended with a unbolted filter housing and an hour long fight to pull the starter. Gave up again.

Cleaned starter and bellhousing. Starter needs attention but not immediately. Wired it back up, solenoid back on. I tried it...click.

Just about to walk away and decided to whack solenoid with nearby screwdriver. Fired right up. I guess I know what to be watching for.

Glad you got it going JC.

Your post brings up one of my parts dilemmas.
I keep lots of spare parts on hand.
Many hanging on the pegboard including a solenoid.

But, if I don't test it I don't know if it is any good until I need it.
That doesn't help much with trouble shooting, and, if it is bad it's
too late to send it back. However if I do test it, it has then been
used and often parts places will not take it back anyway.

Dam'd if you do, dam'd if you don't.
I know, I know. I have such big troubles. ;)

(quoted from post at 16:47:18 10/18/16) Solenoid or 'flat spot' in starter?

Solenoid. I whacked starter too with a hammer handle with no luck.

It'll need brushes and a bendix eventually, but right now it starts first time every time.

That is if the contacts don't stick...

(quoted from post at 23:06:15 10/18/16) Had a father-in-law that lived with us his final years..., he had only one tool: a hammer.
I believe it was Hobo that used to have a signature on here that
said "If a hammer won't fix it, you have an electrical problem."
Or something close to that. I always got a chuckle out of it.

Yep...Good ol' Western Auto wooden handle. I had a 2lb sledge and the screwdriver close by...it was one or the other.
