I'll take this head to a machine shop and have it verified just to be safe. I suspect that it blew because I didn't retorque.

So there also appears to be a debate about using a sealer or not on head gaskets - what say you all?

Is it a metal gasket or a soft gasket?
On a metal one I use sealer. Copper coat usually.

On some soft ones too. If it is a soft gasket, what brand is it?
That may, or may not, help. If it just says NAPA it probably won't.

I never use white latex caulking on them, but I took one apart
where the previous owner had done exactly that. On a used
metal gasket no less. Not surprisingly, it didn't hold.
I don't think it would have even if he had re-torqued it. ;)

Agreed. You cannot go wrong using K&W Copper Coat. 1st used it back in '68 on a 292 Ford. I have used on every head gasket since including tractors and air cooled motors; never had a head gasket problem yet - knock on wood.
