8N parts questions

I am almost finished rebuilding my 8n and need a few tips to finish it up. The first thing is about what kind of hydraulic/trans fluid to use. I looked around and found that the GL-1 90 wt mineral oil 134 is acceptable, but what other options are out there that you have used or recommend using. Another thing is the block that I have does not have the oil filler assembly/tube. What place carries them? I have a opportunity to pull it off of another block, how hard will this be and will it fit correctly in another block? Thanks in advance!

TSC sells a special N-Series Ford Tractor oil that is cheap and should work fine. You might want to archive search the topic based on your climate area. The oil fill tube is not reproduced by anyone yet but Dennis Carpenter and nnalert sells a new breather cap that is ?like original? in looks and function ?see LINK. You?ll have to use your spare tube, just clean out good in mineral spirits and put a dab of epoxy around base so it stays in place. Often these have a loose fit from years of pulling in and out.

The transmission/hydraulic fluid is NOT a big deal.
  • [*:722111d6bb]You can use a mono-grade SAE 90 GL-1 gear oil if you want. That is all the "special" old Ford tractor oil is that TSC sells. As gear oils go it is probably the poorest choice and not something Ford recommended after 1939.[*:722111d6bb]You can use a modern SAE 80W90 (GL4/5) gear oil which is an improved multi-grade formulation of the M4864A/B (SAE 80/90 mld EP) gear oil recommended for the duration of N-series production[*:722111d6bb] You can use any good quality Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid (UTTF) which is a generic equivalent to Ford's M2C-134D specification and what superseded the M4864A/B recommendation and still sold by CNH[/list:eek::722111d6bb]You can probably get away with using SAE 40 or 50 engine oil if you want but I would advise against it.
