8N distributor fit issues?

Hi All,

I'm sorry it's come to this...I've been able to fix most all my previous problems by staying off the boards and searching old threads, but I'm stuck.

I've done some recent work on my 8n (replacing piston rings) and am getting it all back together and have run into a snag. I've got cylinder 1 at TDC and my timing mark at 0deg. I'm trying to drop the distributor back in but it hits a certain point and won't go in any further. It feels like the gears start to engage and you can see the rotor start to turn a little bit, but it won't seat that last 1/4" or so. I've messed around with it the last couple nights for about an hour or so each. I've read they can be tricky and you just have to keep pulling them up and turning them a little until they drop back in, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I don't know if I'm missing something, or if it's a bigger issue.

Thanks in advance,
Justen

JMOR - no I haven't. I pulled it out before pulling the oil pan and timing cover off and set it off to the side, cap and plug wires still attached. I only pulled the cap off a couple days ago when trying to reinstall it. That's as much as I've done with it.

Now, the PO did a tune up a couple years ago and I believe cap/rotor/points were part of it. The tractor ran pretty good up until the rebuild...it just smoked a lot and myself and the PO believed it to just be rings which brought me to where I am now.

Does the collar on shaft (against lower distr housing) and the gear look to be in same positions as this one?

I believe so, but I'll double check when I get home in a couple hours. Still at work

This a magneto for a side mount but it mounts the same as a distributor and this one goes right on my 8n with no problems, if I can get the right tooth in the right place.

JMOR- checked when I got home, everything looked the same. I got the distributor to go in but it didn't just drop in. I got to the point I was before, where it would start to engage. Then I turned the flywheel until it pulled the distributor down till it was where it should sit.

Thinking that might have aligned things making it easier to drop in and because I still felt uneasy about making the cam gear pull the dizzy in, I took it all back out. Tried to drop it in but still nothing. Sooo, I put it back, pulled it in with the flywheel till it was fully engaged and then used the starter to crank everything. The dizzy rotated as it should or so it appears. I think I'll leave it as is for now and see if I can get it fired up and timed tomorrow.

Thanks
