Want a smaller truck But I do want extended cab-not full crew cab---What is about the smallest available? That has a good dependability record?? Tacoma looks like a possible option---BTW 2 wheel drive..want 4wd but just dont need it at all..Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks

We've had quad, club, and crew cab trucks, all Dodge. The 4 door cabs are most convenient by far. Definitely like the Dakota's, but they don't make 'em anymore. Put 212,000 on a '01 Dakota, still ran and drove great when it got sold.

Are you thinking of buying brand new? Using just for a daily driver? Hauling stuff? I bought an older full size truck just for the pulling capacities. The siblings give me a hard time about my old workhorses. ;)

Never really found that 4x4 is very useful. Even in winter roads.

Honda makes a smaller pickup now. More a luxury truck, looks similar to the Toyotas.

I am on my 5th or 6th Tacoma truck. The last one has auto transmission. Very good and very dependable.

Tom, I have had the very same concerns as you. I had a 98 Dakota and loved it for size, comfort and handling. It started reacting to the NE Ohio winter salt conditons,(AKA rust), so I traded it for a new 2008 Chebby Silverado. I hated that truck ever since I got it. Too tall to get in and out of, and too hard for me to judge the front and rear bumpers when parking. I think it has 17" tires on it which I see no need for. I have owned two Toyoto cars in my lifetime and can't find a thing to dislike about either. Thought I'd trade the Chebby in for a Takoma, but seeing as how I only just turned 12,000 miles on it, thought I really didn't get my money out of it to make a trade. The Takoma is what I would get if and when I do decide to make the trade. Don't think you would go wrong in doing so.

Youngest son recently bought a 2016 GMC Canyon . Nice little truck. 3.6 with automatic trans. Drove from St. Louis area to Iowa City last week and got 23mpg.

Ford is bringing back the Ranger. I have had two of them since 1991 with no problems except normal wear. both 4 x4 and I get into the back country often, I use 4 wheel drive every day to get up my driveway. I would look for a good used Ranger with large v6 with 4 wheel drive.

some of those v-6's had head gasket problems if the AF was not changed as per maint. schedule. happened to my mom's sable. hidden warranty paid for the head gasket replacement.

I would just buy a regular cab pickup., that's what I been doing now that its just me and mamma. They are a hell of alot cheaper and easier to see out of. If I need more doors or room we take the car.
