Battery Charger

Alright guys, time to share!

I have terrible luck with 6 volt battery chargers (this is the PRIMARY reason I'd consider a 12v conversion - but I really don't want to go there)

What kind of battery chargers are you using on your 8N's?

Brand/make/model/price and pictures would be awesome!

Sharing is caring - and we all care about our Ford's!

25/30 yrs old and still goin strong.

I use Battery Tender brand float chargers on
all the tractors, old cars, golf cart, etc.
I get 8+ years out of batteries, 6v or 12v.

I've got an old 6/12v Sears battery charger
that only gets used for electrolysis now.

I use mostly Craftsman automatic 6/12 V maintainers.

Available for around $20.00 if you wait for the proper sale.

i can't help u, i have a venerable (~30 years old) 12 volt only ATEK. it has no knobs, it has no switches. it has 2 "settings" - it's either connected to a battery and plugged in, or it isn't :)

If you are talking about new ones they are out there but it's going to cost you to get a decent one. Lot of the new chargers don't even charge 6 volt anymore.

I'm glad all 4 of by OEM 6 volts have been converted.

Mine is an old Schauer I have had for years & probably bought at an auction somewhere, so I have no idea of age. It has only one control, a switch w/2 settings - 6 volt & 12 volt - & an amp gauge.

harbor freight big roll around hi capacity charger booster job. stopped using all my smallish chargers now.

Man, I don't how to say this. I have an old Dayton charger that's 6v low 6v jump, 12v low 12v jump, 18v low 18v jump and 24v low 24v jump. I gave $5.00 for it 15 years ago. This thing is awesome. I really need to fix the cooling fan(maybe someday), but it won't quit!!

BTW....you do know the difference between a float charger & a battery charger, right?

A float charger is helpful; not a trickle charger, but a float charger. A battery charger, even a "trickle" charger, left unattended will eventually boil out a battery. I use float chargers for two reasons: battery longevity and a sure start. Battery sulfation occurs at a specific rate at "X" temperature. Over time, sulfation reduces battery performance and eventually its effects are irreversible. Sulfation of batteries starts when specific gravity falls below 1.225 or voltage measures less than 12.4 for a 12v battery, or 6.2 for a 6 volt battery. Sulfation hardens on the battery plates reducing and eventually destroying the ability of the battery to generate current. Using a float charger significantly reduces sulfation. Your battery loses 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50 percent of its power when the temperature falls below zero.

I'd love to be able to use a float - but I can't devote my workshop (i.e.- the garage) to the tractor during the nice months, and haven't run a power drop to the tractors living spot in the yard yet, since I doesn't have a designated spot...yet.

That being said, I usually deal with a completely depleted 6v battery 2 or 3 times a year - almost always by surprise, when I really need the tractor for something!

I'm on my 3rd 6v charger since getting the 8N a couple years back. The first 2 gave the battery a full charge, then never worked again (on 6v - they still charge 12v just fine...)

The 3rd one is still working, but I thought I'd "do some research" (read: ask you guys!) to help with the decision making process!

My neighbor has a float charger hard-wired to his 8N battery. The charger itself is in the 8N tool box. He runs a drop cord to the charger.

I'd been thinking of tucking one away under the hood somewhere, for this winter when it's in the garage all the time. When it's -30F outside, that garage still gets pretty cold!

I've got a list of mods and improvements I'd like to get done before the snow falls here. I'd like to get the coolant heater installed, battery heater wrap installed, brake pads changed, seals replaced, an oil change... ya know, all those things that probably won't happen till next summer? ;) I'll probably be lucky just to get the plow repaired, rebuilt, and mounted back in the bucket!
