Re-splining steering shaft

Is there a way to re-spline the steering shaft. Have a new steering wheel and steering shaft splines are worn down allowing steering wheel to spin.

Not economically. It could be welded up and cut back down
in a machine shop but it would be cheaper to replace the shaft.

What tractor are we talking about? You might find a used shaft.

Another less expensive option would be to cut a key way in the
shaft and use a keyed steering wheel but that wouldn't put your
new steering wheel to use.

Try another washer under the nut to shove it down farther?

Last resort? Tack weld it on. Ugly, but it works.

Google dutch or scotch keyway.
They are simple to do and all you need is a
hand drill.
You could probably find some videos on
youtube. Another idea might be to use a
piece of braided wire.
The driver's side windshield wiper on my
Chevy has a stripped spline.
So I took a short piece of lamp cord,
stripped the insulation back about 3/4"
stuck the wires into the hole then put the
wiper arm on and tightened it down. It
lasted that way for about 5 years till they
replaced my windshield and I had to do it
again. Your spline is bigger/heavier so use
a piece of 14 ga multi stranded wire.
That's easy enough to try and if it doesn't
work dutch key it.

lotsa booger ways to do it.. one correct way.

correct way.. new shaft.

booger ways? lots,, some better than others.

cross drill the steering wheel hub and shaft.for a pin or bolt.

cut a key way in the steer wheel hub and shaft you have.

braze the splines up a hair, file out with a triangle file a bit, and then drive it on.

Combo of 1 and 2 ...

Last case I would tack weld the hub to the top of the shaft. could angle grinder it off in seconds.. but it's the worst of the
booger methods.

You left out driving a couple small finish nails into the splines

TOH

Or turn the hub much thinner and then weld heavy penetration beads full around to shrink the id.

I'll admit to having done two of the dugestions on related parts, and seen all of them.

My naa had some odd car? Steering wheel on it, no splines in hub, they cross drilled gor a roll pin then stuck a nail or bolt thru the hole and it rusted or they cut the head off. Heat to get it loose melted the rubber hub with metal innards, then I drove the pin out. Threads were cleaned with a triangle file, hit with neverseize and a oe repop wheel went on fine.

Guess they didn't have one handy!

Seen everything

My 2n, many nuts were stripped and tack welded on. Foot pegs broke off and big carriage bolts welded to the nubs. All cotter pins were wire staples or finish nails.

My 950, pulled lift cover, no cotter pins, a weld glob was added to pin tails :(

Took me all day with a file and die grinder to take that sucker apart to weld up the cam
