Brush Mower Suggestions

Hi, all.

I have a 5' IMCO brush mower that's on its last legs, and I need to replace it.

I only need to mow about 3 acres of prairie grass that I let grow from mid-summer until hard frost, and then I cut it in April (when it's at 3-4 feet and dead), once in May, and once in June. I then start the cycle over. There isn't really any brush because I've kept it mowed down over the years. It's just tough prairie grass that we enjoy looking at. It turns a red/gold in the fall, a nice straw color during the winter, and eye-popping green in the summer.

I've used my Exmark 60" commercial ztr to do the job with the deck set at 6 inches, but the height of dead grass in April and the thickness of the grass in May is at the Exmark's limits, so the IMCO has been my first choice.

I'm looking for recommendations on a brush mower.

I don't want to spend a fortune, and have looked at the Mahindra line.

Any thoughts on brands? Anything to stay away from?

Thanks for the advice.

I looked at the mahindra line and seemed well built for the money. One of the main things I would pay attention too is the weight of the mower. Some of the heavy duty mowers might actually weigh too much for the N tractors. If you are just mowing grass I think a lighter or mid level brush cutter would do fine and last a long time if you take care of it

When I got my 2N the first implement I put
behind it was a new 5' King Kutter brush
mower.
I used and abused it for about 3 years then
bought a 33 hp Ford 2000 and abused it for
another couple of years behind that. Then I
bought a package deal with a real Bush Hog
so I sold the King Kutter to a neighbor. He
is
still using it behind a 40 hp Ford 860 11
years later.
I also bought a new 6' KK finish mower and
used that hard for 10 years till I found a
used 7' KK fm which I'm still using behind a
37 hp 3000. King Kutter is a lower end
machine but I have had good luck with the
brand.
Behind a 23 hp N it will do good for you.
Made in USA too. Buy a 5' whatever brand you
get.

Whatever you choose, do your homework on repairs and parts. Most everything is foreign made now but getting parts can be a problem...farm auctions are good places to find used ones

I have a Howse brand cutter 5ft,
Does a good job, have a dealership close by if I need parts, but have not needed any parts,

Med weight machine,

I do wish it had a front chain guard as it did thrown out a stick once that hit me on the ankle,
The front chain guard cost almost as much as the cutter,

All cutters need front and rear chain guards but that would greatly increase the cost of the machine, most all larger heavy duty cutters have the
guards,

I use a Woods 5 FT mower and never had a problem. It's now 9 years old. It might cost more in the beginning but it holds up.

Me too on the Woods. I purchased my 8N with the Woods M5 five foot mower on it. I've abused that thing on my 5 acres for ten years and it's still going strong. I did put a stump jumper on it two or three years ago. The only other new parts have been a new set of blades.
