Thought I posted this yesterday but it didn't show up? Anyhoo- Mower has a single cyl. Briggs. Went to start it and did nothing. Checked switch, batt. etc. All OK. Ordered a solenoid and installed. Went to start and wires started smoking. Did I hook it up bassackwards? No marking on solenoid.

Which wire started smoking? The large wire or the small wire.
Switch is very simple. When mine went bad, I just jumped accros the 2 large terminals. The small wire comes from the key to activate a good solenoid. Check on how you got the wires hooked. Sounds like you got a short direct to ground.

(quoted from post at 07:16:38 09/30/16) How many wires does it have? Some have four. Some have five.

Which wires did you have where? 1 Big lug should have only the starter wire, other big gets batt lead, alt/charge wire, mebbe light feed. And the slip on spade comes from the key switch to trigger the solenoid. Needs bolted to frame for ground.

Thank you Gears. Answers my question. I believe I had the wire to the switch hooked up on the side that goes to the starter. Sound right?

that'd make some smoke. The small gauge (#14?) charge/feed wire is too small to try and drive the starter.

Yupper. If I had been thinking when I installed the new solenoid, it probably would have occured to me. The old thinker is getting a little unreliable lately.
Thanks for your help.
