Haven't been on the forum in quite a while as the old girl just chugs along with very few issues...
'49 8N w/ 6v POS grnd system still in place...
Started having problems with a solenoid of unknown age not engaging. Installed a spare that I ordered several years ago, and the MOMENT I hooked up to the battery it sparked and started turning the starter! I immediately disconnected the trigger wire at the solenoid thinking it might have a short, but reconnecting the BATT cable caused the same problem. I then disconnected the copper bar from the starter and reconnected the trigger wire. The solenoid seemed to operate just fine with the starter switch and only passed 6v to the output side when the switch engaged. Put the copper bar back on and have the same problem.
Finally decided to exercise the old solenoid a bit and re-installed it. Worked fine, but I don't trust it anymore.
Have I simply gotten a defective new solenoid?
