Type A transmission fluid

Ok, so I have a Davis FEL and the manual says to use Davis Hydraulic oil or type A transmission oil.

So what is equivalent to type A trans oil? What do you guys use in your Davis loaders?

Back in the day, there were only 2 types of automatic transmission fluid: type A for Chrysler's & GMC's & Type F for Fords. IIRC, Dexron replaced Type A.

But, I do have CRAFT. So maybe somebody older/smarter than me will be along soon.

You are talking 50 year old petroleum technology which is dead as a dodo. Put any good AW hydraulic oil in it.

Of course I know it's old, it's from the original manual. That's why I wanted to know what's equivalent to it. What's the "AW" stand for?

I guess I could use the same thing in my MF202 power steering pump. It also calls for type A.

AW stands for anti-wear and should work fine in the hydraulic system of your Davis loader which uses a generic gear pump. That is what it is made for. I would be leery of putting AW hydraulic fluid in a PS system that calls for ATF. I would suggest Dexron III which is generally backward compatible in applications that originally specified Type A.
