2N no start

12v with the front mount distributor converted to use a 12v round can coil.
Points have less than 5 hours
Condenser changed at the same time as the points.
Proper point-gap was set and timing is spot on.
Battery showing 12.8v at the terminals.
Toggle switch(not a key switch) tested good with the meter.
Cleaned the battery ground at both ends, battery positive at both ends, starter connection at both ends.
Getting 6.8v at the starter with the toggle switch on.

Was out working and had to stop to pull some clutter out of my path so I turned off the tractor to do the work. Came back 10 minutes later and the starter won't turn at all. No click, buzz, whirr, or thunk at all when the starter button is pressed. What else should I look at to figure this out?

Does it have the OEM neutral safety switch
on the transmission? If so, jump it.

If that doesn't work, jump the solenoid.

If that doesn't work, see tip # 43 to jump
the starter.

6.8 at the starter on a 12 volt set up?
your machine probably does not have a solenoid and the mechanical switch or the linkage to it may be bad.

I always like to delve into the system malfunctioning and do maintenance while I'm in there. Pulled the mechanical switch and gave everything a good cleaning, tested the switch with the meter and it worked perfect every time. Looked at the plunger and it was making contact. Jumpered direct from the battery to the starter and nothing happened.

It was the starter! Pulled it, replaced it with one from one if my 8Ns and it fired up right away. Got to see in the bell and found out that my Sherman step-up has a dealer perfect sticker on the side of it still. New starter installed and the beast just did a run around the field with no issues.

Guess it's time to invest in one of those newer style starters and get this old one rebuilt as a back up for the future.
