9N start up

Not started in 10 years. Drained the fuel. Looks and smell like Kero but I find no conversion so I guess I will clean up and try gas. I Put a jump
on her and she turned over. So I'm encouraged that I can get it started. Should I buy distributor, wires and plugs on line or parts store? Will pull
engine covers and flush etc. install a 6v battery and clean carb.

If anyone has done this and can save me heartache please fill me in. Thanks so much. Hope to restore all the way.

People drag tractors into my yard all the time. Some of the tractors have not ran in 15 years. I start first with the fuel system.Plan on putting a kit in the carburetor. Blowing out the fuel line and installing a new screen and gasket in the fuel strainer. Depending on what the inside of the fuel tank looks like. Some I have replaced the tank with a new one and some times I blow the crap out.

Next is new plugs and maybe wires depending on what type of core they have and if they are cracked or falling a part. New points and condenser.

You say you are going to bring this one back so you might as well pull the hood and start from scratch. First thing I do is a compression check to see if it has the capability to start after I get the other things done. Then I get rid of the old wiring and install a new harness, including plugs and plug wires. I then pull the carb and distributor and clean and replace parts that are needed. If everything looks good I change all the fluids. Check your gas tank and fuel line, make sure they are clean. Check your radiator hoses, remember this tractor has sat for 10 years. It looks like a fun project and looks like an early 9N from the oil level check plug on the side of the transmission. If you can see if the serial number can be read.

Looks like that tractor has a '39 hood with a snap in battery door. Also looks like 32" wheels.

I would soak the cylinders with ATF before starting. Even though the engine is free - it may free up some sticky rings.

Thanks. The SN is star 9n10706 star. Will be back up there this weekend. Look forward to seeing how far I get. Thanks for all the post and help. Will let y'all know what she does.

I hope you didn't already cause yourself more work by jumping it.
The first thing I do is soak the cylinders for a while.
Either with ATF or MMO so the rings and sleeves have lube.
Rolling them over dry and rusty can break piston rings.

Anyway, I would still soak them while you're thinking on it.
The second thing I do is put my wallet away.
Don't buy a danged thing if it is not required.

Clean the points. Clean the plugs. Clean the battery cable
connections at both ends. Clean the carb if you can do so
without buying a rebuild kit. Cleaning is nearly free.

Check the voltage through the key switch to the coil.
Make sure the points make and break contact.

Once you're ready to roll it over, prime the oil pump, take the
plugs out and roll it over to blow the soaking ATF/MMO out.
Key off, watch the oil pressure gauge for pressure.

Once you've got oil pressure, check for spark.
Good spark? Check compression. It doesn't need to be stellar
at this point, just good enough to draw in fuel.

Then try it. Use the palm of your hand over the carb throat
opening to choke it. Ether may also work, but use it sparingly.

If it starts, even for a few seconds, you have a
chance to evaluate sounds and smoke from the exhaust.
Keeping in mind the oil you put into the cylinders to soak it.
That will obviously cause some smoke.

If it hammers at the mains/rods it could be a more costly fix.
With an early 9N I wouldn't want to cause it more damage by
running it. I would have to decided if I were in for the long
haul money wise.

It's a nice looking machine. Let us know what you find!

Deffinately let the cyls soak with some atf in them, then later, roll it over with plugs out to clear the oil.

Unless the distribuitor is bad, no need to replace.

do the stuff like wires and points etc.

Oh and that right front tire might need a plug and some air. ;)

Thank you and to everyone that was kind enough to help. I'm pumped about getting her running. And yes I ordered original front tires from D tire! At least I can have some shoes on her sitting at the front of the ranch. I love projects and am encouraged about the challenge. Will send pics of the progress !
