Another purchase consideration: 49 8N

There is an 8N for sale near me. It's actually just a couple miles down the road. I looked at it last night, and while I don't know what all to look at, it didn't look terrible to me. It does have newer paint (mentioned in the ad).

There's some rust around the hood area/dashboard that was painted over. It is a 12v conversion.

They are asking $1,100 for it.

I'm pretty darn interested since it's right up the road, and the price is in the right range for me. Anything to consider when I go to look at it later today?

The price is pretty darn good for an 8n. I would shake the rear
wheels to see if the hubs are loose on the axles. For $1100 I
would still buy it even if both were loose.

I would check how much play is in the steering.

What would turn you away from it given the price point?

How much steering play is too much?

Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate it!

Loose steering is most often the bearings. They can be fixed but
is a project. Sometimes the top bearing is completely gone. When
this happens the wheel and shaft will screw out several inches.

If it starts and runs ok, it would depend on the tires. If they are good then it would be a good price. Tires all around will cost that much.

Thanks for the links. I've been searching for a tractor here for quite a while, looking for something to run a finish mower or brush cutter. I'm trying to not get overly excited and make sure I'm going about this the right way. I'm nervous to end up with a $1000 paperweight.

I check CL daily in our area. Send me
an email through the sight if you want
so I can let ya now about some good
deals that pop up, if you don't get
this one.

This 8n doesn't seem too bad.

"I'm nervous to end up with a $1000 paperweight."

Good thinking. The nice thing about N's is that parts are available.
Those parts, along with the N's are relatively inexpensive.

If you're looking at the same ad I saw, it is a front mount 1949.
Not a bad tractor, maybe not as desirable as one with a side mount
distributor. Still, if it runs good and has good tires, not a bad deal.

Check the link to John's site, but off the cuff, make sure the
3pt works both in draft and position control modes.
Check for water in the oil. Engine and hydraulics.
Check for smoke out of the exhaust. If there, what color?
Any knocking or noises in the engine/transmission/hydraulics?
Does it go into and stay in all gears up and down hill?

Prices vary by region.A good running 8N in central WI is $2500 at a minimum right now. Prices are crazy high right now. I am looking for an 8N, NAA or hundred series but just holding tight due to the market right now.

"Prices vary by region."

Very true.
Asking prices and selling prices are also far apart in many cases.
I would sure want to see it in person if I were interested.

Don't worry homesteaderman, I haven't got the tool box mounted
on my new trailer yet so I'm not heading out after it. ;)

LOL I hope you were able to pick it up.
If so, make sure you use an ORC on the PTO for a rotary mower.
A finish mower you might get by without one but it still wouldn't hurt.
