Just a simple question

My nephew and I pulled the top cover off my 8N. I'm just wondering, since him and I will be dropping the pump next week I would imagine the pump weighs less than that top cover.

Is that correct?

I don't have exact weights, but I believe you are correct.
The pump isn't all that heavy.
It does take some maneuvering sometimes though.
I have a parts pump out in the shed I move around fairly often.
If I don't care what angle it is in, I can lift it with one hand.
To set it up straight on the shelves I have to use both.

I use a floor jack with a piece of wood to get the angle I want when removing and reinstalling the pump it works well for me. Like Royce say's it takes
some wiggling around and keeping to get it in. Good luck. the gasket in place

That's what I was wondering about. I have a DVD on repairing the N's hydraulic system. Those guy used gasket cement on both top and bottom gaskets.

On the top cover, I plan to stick a couple of studs in the bolt holes to hold the gasket in place while putting the top on, then just removing the studs and putting in the bolts.

But on the bottom pump gasket should I use maybe a couple dabs of gasket cement just to hold the gasket in place?

Yes. The pump is mostly aluminum and much lighter that the top cover.

Even an old guy like myself can R&R the pump unassisted.

Once upon a time when I could not get help timely enough to suit me I removed the lift cover from my 860 unassisted but that was years ago, a real struggle at the time, and dangerous.

Most folks here say nothing on the gasket,I got mine up real close then checked to make sure the gasket was correct as I lined up the bolts, ( no goop and no leaks so I guess that worked. I have done it that way on 2 tractors and no leaks either time. I will say though yrs ago I had a top cover off a 52 8n to replace piston seals and I put back dry and it leaked down the outside around from port where it goes up into the cover and to the piston. Since then I use a small amount of permatex around the port on both sides of the gasket. I just rebuilt the pump on my 48 8n a month ago and the PO. had put it on with something on both sides of the gasket, it took me longer to scrape it all off both the pump and the underside of the housing then the pump rebuild.

I used a engine lift on my 8n top cover and had my wife lower it down slowly while I guided the lever into the the pocket. you have to be able to trust the person on the cylinder control though, My wife is a keeper LOL.

Yes, pump is lighter and some good suggestions below on pulling it out. I use my floor jack, let the back edge down about 1/2 inch and slide back slightly. Caution, keep 2 hands on it. ps Hope you have pulled the PTO shaft.
To put it back in, front edge goes in slightly higher than the rear and slide forward. Careful with the new gasket,

Holy smokes I don't know how that last sentence got so twisted up LOL. Just keep moving words around until it makes sense.
