I always thought about any oil sold would be good enough for these old tractors and would be better than oil sold in the 40's, Apparently not so, Dollar General's 30 wt oil not recommended for any motor after 1930 and they are looking at class-action lawsuit.

over the years I have picked many a container of oil only to read (usually on the backside) that the oil is no good for modern engines. I guess if you are too lazy to read container labeling you are destined to fail.

Lot, in fact most of the population don't know enough about anything mechanical to think they should have to read the label. And not knocking people in general but a heck of a lot of people are in a rush. Plus add in most educated people drive much newer vehicles that don't use oil. So who's buying this stuff? People who drive older vehicles that use oil, most of them being low income who don't read well because of the school system. I wouldn't call them lazy as such. More like uninformed/under educated.

Guys, we, us here on these forums, people on car/truck forums, have a great deal of interest in mechanical things and many of us have pretty good mechanical skills. We are the odd balls of society! The vast bulk of the population just don't know. Not really their fault either. If their dad didn't work on his own stuff just how were they supposed to learn? And I saw that in the 60's growing up in the suburbs. My dad was the only guy in our neighborhood fixing his own car by 1971 when we moved from NJ to MN. Most of the kids my age at that time never had the chance to learn so they didn't have anything like that to pass on to their kids. So it's easy for those of us, lucky enough to have had a father who could do things to ridicule people who didn't have those opportunities.

I think the first problem is buying oil at dollar general. I guess I wouldn't expect it to be as harmful as it has turned out to be but I also would not be looking to buy oil from a dollar store.

" My dad was the only guy in our neighborhood fixing his own car by 1971 "

Yep, same here. My father did all the tune-ups, oil changes, etc. At some point, he had a Ford wagon & needed a special wrench to set the timing; wow, was he pizzed!

And, he also fixed everything around the house. I never saw a plumber or electrician growing up. If it broke, he fixed it or it stayed broke until an uncle/neighbor/friend come over to help.

The drain field got clogged w/ roots. He could have rented a backhoe & had it dug up......or, he could have given his 16 year old son a grubbing hoe & a shovel & told him to start digging.

I consider myself to have "hands on" knowledge of urban septic systems!

You will find that category of engine oil (Mono-grade non-detergent API Service Class SA) many places other than DG. It has it's uses but not in automotive or tractor engines although a few folks here swear by it  The issue in that lawsuit is not going to be the oil but rather the alleged "deceptive labeling". This label seems pretty explicit to me....

I was given an unopened 2 gallon jug of 30W non detergent oil. I was going to turn it down because I couldn't think of anything to use it in. Squirt can? But the lady pushed it on me so I obliged her and brought it home where it sat for a couple of years. One day I was doing an oil change and forgot to buy oil for the air cleaner. So I used that oil. Good use for it. 2 gallons ought to last for a few years of oil changes in the air cleaner.

looks like oil for an air compressor. ;) An old air compressor at that. Most of the new ones ask for syn oil.

Sure you can use it in your N. As another poster pointed out. Air cleaner.

I was given 4g of cheap utf oil that listed no specs.. I use it as air cleaner oil...

Look how much of the cheap 303 Tractor/Hydraulic oil Tractor Supply sells. No one looks at those specs and uses it in their new tractors.
